After few months of marriage, they had to travel to their hometown as the government had ordered to take census. The journey would take several days and they had to travel by foot or by donkey.
They were told that there were no places to stay, once they reached the hometown. He was running to all the inns to check the rooms since she was about to deliver the baby. Seeing that she was due at any moment, an owner of the inn told him that they could stay in his stable.
He and she settled down on the hay in the stable with animals. She went into labor and little Jesus was born in the stable.
